We are recent first time home owners, and we are looking to make our house a home. What better way to do it than customize various rooms in our house to meet our design tastes.
We decided to go with an accent wall in our living room to give the area some texture and design appeal without having to always lean into artwork to fill every area of the home.
Tik Tok and Youtube were our best friends in learning how to put the wall to together and learning how to best use our tools.
It was a fun projects that only took a day and a half, and with some pre planning, one could knock it out even sooner!
Here is How to Make a DIY Panel Wall
Getting Started
Materials and Tools: Assemble the necessary materials, including plywood or MDF panels, adhesive (we used a nail gun rented from Home Depot), tape measurer, a saw (like this miter saw), level, wood filler, sandpaper, paint or wallpaper, and any decorative elements you desire.
Planning Your Project
Measure: This part is very important as it will help dictate all that you’ll purchase and ensure that your panels appropriately fit your wall. Start by measuring out your entire working space. Determine the number of panels that you would like to do and calculate the space that you will like between each panel. Be mindful of items such as light switches our outlets so that you know where they land in your design schematic.
Here is how we mapped out our wall:
Shopping: Home Depot will be your best friend when putting together a DIY wall panel. Purchase all of your supplies from a similar home supply store, or order most off of Amazon.
Preparing Your Space
- Ensure your wall is clean and smooth.
- Measure and mark panel placement for symmetry – I used painter tape to map everything out.
- Choose an adhesive that offers secure attachment – we opted for a nail gun to secure the panel, this helped to ensure if we ever changed our minds, we would just have to fill the holes instead of patch the wall with an adhesive.
Building Your DIY Wall Panels
Cutting the Panels: Use a saw to cut the plywood or MDF panels to your desired size and shape. We opted for a simple design, so all that we needed was 45 degree cuts.
Applying Texture or Decor (OPTIONAL): Experiment with texture by applying fabric, textured wallpaper, or other decorative elements to the panels.
Installing Your Panels
- Tape all of your panels to the wall using painters tape. This will ensure you have a good idea of where all the panels will be placed.
- Start by remeasuring each box according to your original design.
- Level each piece to ensure they are straight as you go. An even before you nail it into the wall, measure and re-level again!
- Once you finish your panels, fill holes with wood filler, this is crucial! You want everything to be smooth also, so sand down the wood filler as you get ready for your next step.
Painting or Finishing
- Select a color palette that aligns with your vision – we opted for a minimal look, so we painted in the same color as the walls.
- Apply paint or finish to the panels for a polished look.
Maintenance and Care
- Keep your DIY wall panels in top shape by regular cleaning and avoiding excessive moisture and dust.
